How to Identify Your Rug Type
Understanding what type of rug you own is the first step to proper care. Here are the key indicators our specialists look for when assessing a rug.
Check the Back
Flip your rug over. Hand-knotted rugs show individual knots on the back with slight irregularities. Machine-made rugs have uniform, perfectly straight rows. Hand-tufted rugs typically have a canvas or fabric backing glued to the underside.
Examine the Fringe
On hand-knotted rugs, fringe is a structural extension of the foundation threads. On machine-made rugs, fringe is usually sewn or glued on as a decorative addition.
Feel the Fiber
Wool feels springy and resilient. Silk is smooth and cool to the touch with a natural sheen. Viscose resembles silk but feels slightly sticky when rubbed. Cotton is soft and matte.
