Sarouk/ Sarouq carpets are among the most timeless and coveted Persian Rugs of the 19th and 20th centuries and among the most luxurious classically derived, room-sized Persian carpets.
Sarouk/Sarouq (also called Sarough and Saruq rugs) is a name of a village situated about 25 miles north of Arak (Sultanabad). This region became one of the most active regions of carpet weaving in the late 19th Century through the early 20th Century. The city's most famous designer was named Farahan. To be able to compete with Kashan in rug commerce, Farahan designed rugs with center medallion motives. Today, these carpets are referred to as Antique 19th century Farahan Sarouks. Note the even balance in design, excellent execution and rendering of curvilinear design elements such as the cloud-band and other clearly defined flowers. Instead of wool, cotton is the common material used within all Sarouk rugs. Sporting a cotton foundation and blue wefts give the Sarouk a light texture that is hard to reciprocate. Over this foundation is a thick pile that, in turn, produces a compact one of a kind carpet. Furthermore, the rug's thick and overall light tone combine into a comfortable piece that has a smooth outer layer.
